HT Antenna Question

Hello everyone. I have a 1/4 wave antenna on my 2 meter HT. I have heard of people adding a cut to length wire to the antenna connector. The idea is now you have a half wave 2 meter antenna. I understand on paper how this might help you receive a better signal. My question is this, is there any real world performance gain or do you just have extra wire hanging from your Yaesu? THere is a significant improvement. We do this with our HTs here,
