Is anyone having problems with parents not allowing their kids to get FRN's? I send home an information sheet with how to do it and why it's needed. This semester, so far, I've had 2 students that told me their parents would not allow them to get the FRN, even if it means not getting their license. Any ideas?

I can't say I've heard this one, but I'm not shocked. I did have an issue with an international student not having an SSN, but we filled out the paperwork and got it right away. The main issue I had was getting them to remember to bring the number with them.

Perhaps they're concerned about sharing all of the required PII of a minor. Granted, it's no more than Boy Scouts require, but it is publicly listed. Perhaps some educational material is in order or a Q&A / FAQ video for parents may help assuage their fears. Maybe recommend a PO Box for their licensee to be, albeit an added expense. Dear Crowb and all, Well, what parents say is the rule to me. So I’d suggest to invite the parent(s) to one (or more!) of your club meetings and to your Tech license study sessions. I would hope they will see what a great benefit their son or daughter will possess with an Amateur Radio license and an internationally unique callsign. Involvement is the key. They don’t seem to understand without some most involvement. But that’s just my 2¢ for today. The student's I've dealt with just showed up to the testing site with everything so I never thought about it. However, most if not all were students of families that had hams in them...grandparents...so it wasn't questioned. I do see where it could become problematic. Maybe explain to them that the FCC went to FRN to eliminate the SSN? (I think security was one of the reasons?). You are basically taking a government record (SSN) from one government agency to the other and if done correctly, no one but the government will actually see the SSN? Then you can argue the USPS and FCC are independent agencies...whatever that means...it has come up a few times (hey...I teach the G/T kids so we wind up waaaaaaay off track sometimes...) What Christopher says is exactly how I dealt with it with the Padawans. I had a couple who said they would not fill it out because they did not want to put the ssn on the FRN form. Once I explained that they are doing it themselves so that no one else has access to the ssn, and that it is just going from one gov site/agency to another, they were okay with it. Thanks everyone. I made up another letter and sent it home with the kids, explaining in detail about the FRN. Hopefully that'll fix the problems.
