Ria, Thank you for your contributions to this forum it is very much appreciated. I typically have avoided posting but do enjoy (for the most part) reading the posts. With the exception from a very few pundits who take the League to task. I do not remember the member who stated "We are the ARRL", i could not agree more. Most of my dealings as a DXer are with the DXCC desk and I am happy to state that there are two ladies Sharon Taratula and Deb Voight who always provide outstanding and excellent service. That being said I have been trying to understand how one receives credit/points toward the Challenge. As of today according to LOTW I have 8734 Records in LOTW, 3029 QSL Records and 1507 Challenge Points/Credits (whatever is the proper term). The website is not clear and it needs to be a lot clearer on how the credits are awarded. Recently I sent to Bart Jahnke at HQ an email to his ARRL.org and also his Gmail that he published In his reply to a post recently I gave several examples and asked how the credits were awarded. I have not heard back. And that is almost 2 weeks ago.. You seemed to be on top of things re awards and wonder if you can explain to this "olde" geezer ' how it works. Understanding LOTW is easy (for the most part), the challenge to me is a mystery. On another manner I reached out to Sharon Taratula (she is a boon to the DXer) and I wondered why quite a few of my old DX contacts did not show a band credit in LOTW. I wish I had saved some of the old green bar tractor fed reports from that time. Sharon as always was speedy with a reply and a solution. Most of the old contacts were from the Don Search (SK) days way before LOTW so I gathered the cards and took them to the local checker. Paying a fee on cards that had already paid for a submission years ago. No biggie...So now my LOTW tally has bands and mode credit for the old cards. When the recent ARRL software update debacle took place my email forwarding no longer worked. It took reaching out to the CEO to get it resolved since I was not getting help.. I was contacted by someone in the IT department and it was resolved quickly Sometimes it takes going to the top to get things done, but I am sure he has more important things to do. Again thanks for what you do. 88 es stay well Neil Foster N4FN

Thanks Neil.
There are some lingering software issues that are being taken care of. Even though I’m not directly involved in the implementation I’ve done this sort of thing before so I know what they are facing in terms of challenges.
Challenge as far as I know is basically just band entity and only for those on the current list. You get no extra points for different modes for challenge. For example if you work Germany on 20 SSB that is a challenge point. If you again work Germany on 20 but on CW that’s not an extra challenge point. However I try to work all entities on the three modes (CW, SSB, Digi) for the three mode awards which is separate from challenge.
As far as LoTW goes -
Challenge is only for current entities. Deleted entities do not count. They also drop off your challenge record once they are deleted. For example I lost the original Netherlands Antilles when they were dissolved. This is ONLY for challenge. Other awards count current and deleted.
LoTW will list your records for credits that you obtained with cards and had in your DXCC record. However I believe that the way they are described in ADIF format they won’t necessarily reflect as confirmed/verified in some logging software.
I really don’t know why you’re being asked to pay again for credits for challenge now from past credits. Seems like it should have been automatically applied. You’re not the first one I’m hearing this from.

Thanks Ria, I would suggest that a CLEAR explanation of the Challenge award be written and published. A few friends have the same issue that I did. I finally hit the 1500 mark last week and that may be it. I doubt I will hit the 2000 mark. I have 347 country/entity confirmations in LOTW and 8 bands. so what I am now chasing is band or mode contacts. Still fun. Again thanks for the reply. Also I agree with others the plaque is ugly. However, I do have one. The certificate is much nicer for the other awards. I have the old and new WAS certificate a nice job was done with the new one. 88 es tnx Neil N4FN and like you I chase 'em on CW, Digital and some Phone. Oh another thought on LOTW why does the column head for Digital still read RT for RTTY. It should have been changed a long time ago. Again my two centavos.

Good afternoon all. I rarely post to this list but I read and enjoy the posts. I have participated in the Challenge since its inception. I just reviewed the rules on arrl.org and found them to be clear and succinct. Including the part about no certificate being available. That discussion has gone on for approximately two years.
May I ask, Neil, what you and your colleagues find wanting in the posted description?

Hello Steve,
All I am is asking is a clarification on how the credits are arrived
at. I do not find a clear and cogent explanation posted on the ARRL
web site. If you can point me as to where the credit scheme is
described it would be appreciated. As far as the plaque/certificate
issue it makes no difference to me. However, I do have the plaque.
That being said it might be nice to offer both. I do think the
plaque and the $10. endorsement medallions are a bit much, but a
money maker for the ARRL.
It was interesting to find out that band credits were not typically
available for DX contacts made prior to LOTW and that a re
submission was required and a duplicate fee. That I am not sure is
proper. But I can live with it as the cost of playing in the game.
Is there a time limit on how long a discussion can take? It can go
on and on as long as it is civil.

I agree that the older style plaques should be available for those that want one. As for the cost, I assume that HQ would just pass that along to the person requesting the award. So there would be no cost to the League. My 2 cents worth. 73 Bruce NJ3K

Some of the legacy awards, ones that take years to complete, (i.e. 5BDXCC, Challenge, etc.), one may start out with the vision in their head of the plaque, then as they finally attain their goal the plaque changes and it is something they might turn their nose up at. For years I worked for the 5XDXCC, then found the plaque changed. Disappointment and heartache. Sharron found one for me and I was excited as a puppy! For challenge, I was always under the impression that if one worked a country on one band it was one point, and if they worked them in a different mode it was another point. From what I now understand that is not so. Despite that, I’m almost there. Pickings get slimmer as you near 300 as I think everyone will agree. Good luck in your endevors gentlemen! Dale K8TS

Good afternoon Dale. I remember a conversation with Don Search at the Huntsville Hamvention, many years ago. At that time Don was in charge of DXCC and the Challenge was being introduced. At no time do I remember mode counters being mentioned. Nor does the current description of the Challenge mention modes other than that any accepted amateur mode (ie. FT8 or FT4) counts for the award so long as the station is legally operating in that DXCC entity.
I am not trying to be argumentative. But as someone who has worked for this award since its inception your description of what counts as a "point" does not jibe with my understanding.
Be well.

Hi Dale,
You are absolutely correct. Challenge ONLY deals with BAND entities and NOT mode. The highlights:
A challenge point is a DXCC entity worked once per band ONLY bands 160 through 6 meters count Working on different modes DO NOT count.
ONLY entities on the current DXCC list count. Deleted entities DO NOT count.
In fact, when an entity is deleted you may very well lose challenge points.
When working a DX entity, working them once per band, and once per mode regardless of band will get you the maximum combination of credits to apply for all current DXCC awards.

All I am is asking is a clarification on how the credits are arrived at. I do not find a clear and cogent explanation posted on the ARRL web site. If you can point me as to where the credit scheme is described it would be appreciated. + Take a look at this state diagram: https://lotw.arrl.org/lotw-help/qso-states/+ Note that QSL cards can be submitted for DXCC Family award credit via "DXCC Online": https://p1k.arrl.org/onlinedxcc/about.php+ The state diagram is valid for QSOs confirmed via LoTW or via QSL cards. 73, Dave, AA6YQ

I agree that the older style plaques should be available for those that want one. As for the cost, I assume that HQ would just pass that along to the person requesting the award. So there would be no cost to the League. My 2 cents worth.

I prefer the more prestigious older looking awards over the new Trendy designs of late. To each their own. Does anyone actually do any marketing studies on what the members actually want before changing awards and art work? Are there panels of people that are asked for their opinions and given options? This is a pretty common thing in marketing and our awards are marketing.

Dave I was referring to the Challenge award NOT LOTW in asking how credits are applied. I also found that per the DXCC dept that in order to get "credit" in my DXCC account old QSL cards prior to LOTW were needed to be resubmitted to get band credit that did not appear in my DXCC account. I did so and the band credits were applied. My only question about the challenge award was how credits were applied....nothing more Neil N4FN

+ They are the same, Neil. A DXCC credit applies to a confirmed QSO - whether the QSO is confirmed via QSL card or via LoTW.
I also found that per the DXCC dept that in order to get "credit" in my DXCC account old QSL cards prior to LOTW were needed to be resubmitted to get band credit that did not appear in my DXCC account.
+ That's because your "old" QSL card was submitted to the DXCC desk "before computerization". In those days, if you submitted a QSL card with DXCC Entity E on Band B in mode M but only requested (and paid for) DXCC credit for E and E-B, that's what was recorded in your DXCC record; no E-M credit was recorded. Today, we pay by the confirmation; submitting a QSL card or LoTW confirmation generates E, E-B, and E-M credit.
