FT4 and FT8 by band
Joe <wq6q@...>
Forgive me if this has been asked and answered herein but does anyone know why LotW WAS Account Credit page does not include FT8 and FT4 by band, like it does for almost every other digital mode?

“Mode by band” for WAS has three awards for each band. Phone, CW, and Digital. The “Digital” award (by band) covers EVERY digital mote. No digital mode gets an “individual” by-band award.

Well, maybe, but I didn't mentioned the word "awards" in my post. I can go to my WAS account, click on some band, and from the drop down menu I can select 30m Clover, click on "Select WAS Award to View", and see what states I have worked using Clover on 30m. Why can't I do the same for FT4 or FT8 for a specific band?

Likely since it is not needed to fulfill the job of the system and they do not have the money to implement something that is not needed, that is just a WIBN.
I think there is Software available that can give you that data if you have all of your logbook of the world data in the database used by such software.

The Dr. Joe Taylor modes came along rather
fast and in copious amounts. I suspect that the ARRL/LotW folks
haven't been able to keep up. Real question: Does it really
matter if it was FT4 or FT8? I don't use either, just wondering.

I suppose that it matters as much as being able to see your Cloer or Olivia contacts on a specific band. I suspect a high percentage of a particular digital mode users track WAS, or even DXCC, in that mode and even on a specific band. I mean, really, what is the point in any digital transaction?

OK. Maybe expecting ARRL/LoTW to keep track
at that fine a resolution for everyone is asking a bit much, but
as I said, I don't use any digital mode except RTTY ... well, and
CW.

The ARRL should be
providing services and things that the members want. If the
members desire FTX tracking and FTX awards and there is a high
demand, then the ARRL should be looking at ways to satisfy this
desire and sell more awards. Right?

The more awards offered the more they can "sell". I assume that once the infrastructure is in place that awards bring in a nice sum of funds constantly. I think this is an area where the League could improve and more more proactive. FTX was going to be huge and it is not going away. The technology needs to be built to easily allow the addition of new awards/modes. The hobby is constantly changing and the League is usually slow to respond to these changes. Yes, you're correct. LOTW was an in-house
development using ARRL IT personnel, and Dave Bernstein has
pointed out that the project was constantly strapped for
personnel, development processes, and validation resources. The
ARRL web site is in a similar shape. We've now made it through 3
election cycles since the Revolt of 2017, the "Old Boys Club"
seems to have been broken up, we have a new CEO who is an active
ham, and perhaps things will begin to turn around. It's only fair
to give the BoD and leadership a chance now.

LoTW has been operating at a loss since its inception; that's not financially sustainable. I suspect that's the case for the League's entire awards program, but I don't know that for a fact. + The ARRL's LoTW Committee assembled a plan for the League's "Operating Awards and Activities" business that aimed to generate enough revenue to fund two developers and a product manager while breaking even financially. This product team would continuously seek out new opportunities to delight users while maintaining a non-negative financial performance; extending DXCC to support popular new modes like FT4 and FT8 are embarrassingly obvious candidates. Sadly, the League re-assigned its LoTW developers to other projects in early 2018, preventing any progress in this direction. 73, Dave, AA6YQ |

It is unacceptable that
the awards department is not a profit center. I hope our new CEO
can bring some change in that area. We pay for the awards and
they are not cheap. I doubt they will share their financial
budgets etc. I have to believe that we have members who are
uniquely qualified to fix such things.

There is just no consistency in policy in direction at the League. Once again maybe that can be fixed. W0MU On 12/5/2020 6:15 PM, Dave AA6YQ wrote:

I use both FT8 and FT4. I don't see the point of seeking awards for both. But, after one achieves WAS on FT8, I guess FT4 is another way to do the same thing over. It is not a technical achievement as much as it is another thing to do.
Lots of hams are bored today, even before COVID-19. How many ways does one need to achieve WAS? The rules don't differentiate between FT8 and FT4 but group them together, along many other digital modes, under the category "Digital." When I want to play some game, I first read the rules. But that is just me. -- 73, Bill Mader, K8TE |
