The DXCC rules contain this line concerning robotic operation:

6a)  Each contact claimed for DXCC credit must include contemporaneous direct initiation by the operator on both sides of the contact.

There is something similar for WAS.

How is this enforced?  Is it on the honor system?  How do you know if you worked a robot station?

Has it ever been used to deny DXCC or WAS credit?

Re: Hybrid DXCC application?

k5gzr@...

Hans,
To keep this short... I had a similar situation... total of over 100 QSLs, but less than 100 cards and less than 100 LoTW.
What did I do?
1. Submit an application with just the cards using the online application process (not within LoTW) to add the cards to my 'legacy' account.  Note that you can submit an application that just adds the card QSLs to your legacy account even though the application includes less than 100 QSLs.
2. Once the card QSLs are processed and added to my 'legacy' account, then make sure my legacy DXCC account is linked to my LoTW DXCC account.
3. Finally, use the LoTW application process to submit an award application that will include the 'linked' legacy QSLs and the true LoTW QSLs.
It takes a while to work through this process, but.... It does work.

Hans,
When I have obtained a hybrid DXCC with LoTW and some cards, I used an authorized card checker, who are listed on ARRL web site and available at many HamFest associated with ARRL divisions.

BTW, I agree that DXCC on 30M is hard. …..best wishes,

I’m getting ready to put together a hybrid DXCC application, some cards and some LoTW. I don’t have 100 of either cards or LoTW matches (30 meters, the hardest DXCC I ever did) to allow me to make a “clean” application with one type of confirmation, then add the other type later, so I need some instructions for putting this together.

Is there a FAQ somewhere to help me sort out this process?

+ As described here, the ARRL stopped accepting hybrid applications for DXCC in April of 2012:

http://www.arrl.org/dxcc-and-lotw-faq

+ Instead, submit separate DXCC applications containing QSOs confirmed via LoTW and QSOs confirmed via QSL cards.

+ Instructions for submitting a DXCC application containing LoTW confirmations are here:

I had a similar situation for VUCC. My method was to get a local DXCC checker to review and submit his confirmation to the ARRL, waited until the new totals appeared in the LotW Awards summary, then applied using the LotW application. It took about 3 weeks for that process to work.
Contact a DXCC checker (all can be searched on the ARRL website) and get the details about how to get he process started. I did download a form where I listed all the cards and that went in with the cards. It was fortunate that the guy was only 20 miles away so I handed him the cards and he checked all while I waited. No mailing needed in my case but I do live in the 5th largest metro area in the US.

I don't have the link handy but it wasn't hard to find on the ARRL website.

Hi Coy,

Deleted entities would not apply to VUCC as VUCC is based on maidenhead grid squares.

Hi Coy,

I didn't. I actually received communication from Samantha that it has been corrected and the certificate will be mailed in a couple of weeks. All good now.

Congratulations Hans and Thank you ARRL Awards for the beautiful cert!

I received mine recently and your post inspired me to frame and mount it. Up to 222 verified grids and counting,  barefoot to a Par Omniangle loop at 25 ft. Mostly earned this summer using FT8.

Re: Thank you, Awards Desk

Well done to all the award winners!

One nice thing about mixed DXCC is that it’s relatively easy to explain the essential goal of “contacting 100 countries” to friends and acquaintances who aren’t hams or don’t know about DXCC.

If you get further into DXCC, it gets trickier to explain ‘entities’, the endorsement stickers, single band and mode awards, honor roll etc., especially without coming across as a bit (errrr, how can I put this) obsessive – much the same as in other hobbies that involve collecting things.

I’m quite sure there are accepted rules and practices among the teapot collecting hobbyists, for instance.  Someone’s excitement at finding a particularly rare piece of pottery, with a distinctive spout and a specific designer’s mark on the base (or whatever), would probably come across as fanatical or bizarre to me since I don’t collect teapots, don’t appreciate the value, don’t understand the attraction and frankly don’t really care.  Oh I feel their passion and appreciate their joy alright, but in a strangely detached “Are you for real?” sort of way.

So, I’d be interested to know how you handle this when showing off your DXCC certificates, plaques and the like.  Do you just beam with pride and leave it at that, or do you try to explain?  Any tips to share?

Hans,

Congrats on earning this award! I know fro personal experience how gratifying it is. I FINALLY earned my mixed DXCC earlier this year, a culmination of 34 years in ham radio. Same as you, I was using 100 watts and compromise antennas, mostly from a townhouse.

I am patiently awaiting my certificate, I just got got over 100 and submitted my paperwork, a mixed effort with a G5RV at about 32 ft. and simple 6M Yagi on a tripod at 8 ft. in my front yard which I have to take down weekly before the HOA inspection walks around the neighborhood...
